Swami R. K. Murugesu (1933–2007), known to his devotees as Gayathri Siddhar, was a Sri Lankan spiritual teacher, author and practitioner of Gayathri Sadhana. Born in Kandy in 1933, his early life was marked by hardship, and his spiritual journey began at a young age. Accounts of his life describe how his devotion to mantra and spiritual practice gradually became the foundation of his life's work.
His spiritual journey brought him into the guidance of Sri Kanniah Yogi, under whom he deepened his study and practice of the Gayathri Mantra. Swami Murugesu later dedicated himself to sharing Gayathri Sadhana with ordinary people, emphasizing spiritual practice, devotion and service rather than keeping spiritual knowledge confined to a select few.
In Nuwara Eliya, he established the Sri Lankatheeswarar Temple and Sri Gayathri Peedam, which became the centre of his spiritual work. He also wrote extensively on Gayathri and related spiritual subjects. His book The Great Science and Power of Gayathri was published during his lifetime and was reviewed by Hinduism Today in 1994.
In 2007, Swami Murugesu attained Maha Samadhi. His holy remains were brought back to Nuwara Eliya and placed in the Samadhi shrine at the Peedam, where devotees continue to come for meditation, prayer and reflection.. Today, the Peedam continues to preserve his teachings and the tradition of Gayathri Sadhana, while providing a place for prayer, reflection, learning and service.
A Living Legacy
The purpose of remembering Swami Murugesu is not simply to look back at the life of a spiritual teacher. It is to keep alive the practices, values and spirit of service that he placed at the heart of his work.
His writings and teachings remain available for those who wish to explore Gayathri Sadhana, while the Peedam continues to welcome those who come seeking a deeper understanding of spiritual life.
The poem celebrates Jothi — the Divine Light — as the primordial source of Grace and the Light that pervades all existence.
It speaks of a Light that has remained radiant through all time, present throughout the world and within all life. The heavens, the earth, the wisdom of the Vedas, the light perceived through our eyes, compassion, love, the awakening of wisdom and the realization of the Self are all seen as expressions of this same Jothi.
Yet the Light is not only something beyond us or somewhere in the universe. It is also within us, burning quietly within, illuminating the inner journey and making deeper tapas and spiritual realization possible.
The poem ends as an invocation — a welcoming of that Light and of Grace. As Grace grows, may we receive the blessing of the Guru, and may the Divine Light come forth and shine within us.
“வருக வருக ஜோதியே” — Come, come, O Light.
His Life Journey
Gayathri Siddhar Swami Murugesu dedicated his life to the pursuit of spiritual understanding and to sharing the wisdom of Gayathri with those who sought a deeper path.
His journey was one of devotion, contemplation and inner discovery. Through his teachings, he encouraged seekers to look beyond the external forms of spirituality and turn their attention towards the Divine presence within.
At the heart of his vision was Gayathri Devi — not only as a divine presence to be worshipped, but as a deeper spiritual reality to be discovered within oneself.
For Swami Murugesu, the spiritual journey was not simply about gathering knowledge or following rituals. It was about becoming still, looking within and allowing awareness to unfold through sincere practice.
His Teachings
Swami Murugesu's teachings continue to invite us towards a simple but profound question:
Can we discover the Divine within ourselves?
Through Gayathri, prayer, meditation and contemplation, the seeker is encouraged to move from the outer experience of spirituality towards an inner experience of awareness.
The sacred can be encountered through the temple, through the Lingas, through the mantra and through devotion — but the journey ultimately leads inward.
To discover Gayathri Devi within.
His Legacy
The vision of Swami Murugesu continues through Gayathri Peedam, its temple, its spiritual practices and its service to the community.
